Welcome
Fishers Island Fire Department started with a group of concerned men holding a meeting in the old Union Chapel on April 18, 1927. The meeting was organized by Paul R. Skilling and all in attendance were employees of the Fishers Island Farms.
In August 1927 the Department moved into its first house. The building is now occupied by the Beach Plum and was formerly a meat market. The 2nd floor, formerly Renauad's Restaurant, was converted for use as a meeting hall. The 3rd floor was used as living quarters for bachelor members. This building was used by the department until the construction of the present building in 1964.
In 1977 the Department completed its first Emergency Medical Technicians training class.
In June 1977 the Department christened the first Sea Stretcher. The 36' Hatteras served the Department and Island well for many years. In 1997 She was replaced with the newest Sea Stretcher, a 42' Duffy and Duffy. Her Crew consists of 5 Captains and 7 Navigators who rotate to provide 24 hour coverage.
The Fishers Island Fire Department has around 60 active member which includes the Ambulance Squad which consists of EMT's, MRT's and permanent year round Island Doctor, Dr. Maria Frank.
